Local clothing line aims to 'Save Our Lakes'

Nike has its iconic “swoosh” logo and local clothing company Turtle Beach is aiming to have its “sploosh” logo seen across the world.

Originally started in 1985, Turtle Beach has made a resurgence. Launched this summer, the local company has made an emphasis on helping protect freshwater lakes and raise awareness about water pollution with its “Save Our Lakes” campaign. Turtle Beach donates portions of their sales to the Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association to help their goal in preserving and sustaining Lake of the Woods. Turtle Beach is supporting the mobile boat-washing stations LOWDSA has to prevent invasive species such as zebra mussels from entering the lake.

“The timing couldn’t be better, when I think about when I grew up, there was no awareness for keeping the lake clean,” said founder Bob Firth. “There was very little but you didn’t understand it. Our philosophy was to make awareness through the line.”

Firth, who also runs Bob’s Burger Bar on Main Street, works alongside graphic designer Kelsey Mason and marketing manager Jordan Spencer to operate the newest incarnation of Turtle Beach. The local line uses recycled materials to make their shirts, which is in line with the company’s support for environmental sustainability.

Turtle Beach was popular originally for their tie-dye shirts, which Firth is finding people are still pining for.

“What we’re finding out, and I had no idea, is that old is new,” Firth said. “It’s nostalgia because so many people would come up to me and say ‘Hey Bob you gotta bring Turtle Beach back, I loved it, I still got mine.’”

Firth brought it back and the line initially was ready to go in April but amid the global COVID-19 pandemic pushed the launch date to until the summer. Turtle Beach shirts, hats and other items are available online at turtlebeachclothing.ca or at Bob’s Burgers.
